exploding pyrex

So last night, Alex and I broiled a London broil steak in my oven. I put it in my Pyrex pie pan since it was the perfect size for the meat. I stuck it in the oven and let it cook on one side. When I took it out of the oven to flip the meat, the Pyrex pan just sort of exploded as I held it over the stovetop. Glass shattered all over the kitchen. Alex was standing right behind me when it happened and just sort of stood there with his mouth open, completely in shock. I think I took having something glass shattering while I held it with a potholder in my hand pretty well. Cleaning the glass up was difficult. I'm going to wear flip flops in there for the next couple days or so.

Anyway, after the explosion, I did some research and discovered that it's common knowledge that you're not supposed to put Pyrex in the broiler because it doesn't deliver equal temperature throughout and it just gets too hot in some places and not as hot in others. Anyway, if I hadn't taken it out of the oven at that point, it would have shattered INSIDE the oven...and that wouldn't have been fun.

Um. I passed it. Never broke anything in there either. And I heated a lot of stuff.

I have a scar from doing the same thing. It exploded in my hands as I was taking it out and putting it on the counter (was wearing shorts) and one of the shards lodged into my leg. Not fun.

Ouch. I was wearing shorts too I think. Or maybe it was jeans. I was actually really lucky because it shattered in front of me and went backwards not forwards.

That happened to my mother. She wrote a letter to Pyrex and received (like a bad joke) approximately 13 boxes of pyrex dishes. They just kept showing up day after day................

Maybe I should have written them. Maybe I still will.

One thing alot of people do not understand when they buy any dish is to read the use and care that comes with that product. These things have directions for a reason and believe me if you do not follow them you will be liable for any damages without replacements. I happen to work for Pyrex and we would not replace that because it was your own fault for not reading directions.Just a littel tidbit.
